The Westphal Dean’s Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (IDEA), in partnership with the Westphal Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council (DEIC), are pleased to announce the recipients of its inaugural IDEA-Development, Education, and Cultivation (DEC) Mini-grants. These small seed grants, in amounts between $500-1000 support projects that develop, educate, and cultivate inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism in accordance with the College’s Strategic Plan.

Varlo, the Cherry Hill-based triathlon performance line, collaborated with Hijabi athletes and current graduate Fashion Design student Sehlah Ahmad (’23) to develop the first hijab wear plus full coverage apparel to multisport.

Joining us from William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA, Francis has already brought energy and ideas into our community as we strengthen a culture of belonging.

In summer term of 2021, eight undergraduate students from Westphal College of Media Arts & Design participated in Drexel’s STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars Program through the Pennoni Honors College. The STAR Scholars Program enables a cohort of highly motivated early undergraduate students to engage in faculty-mentored research, scholarship, or creative work. This year’s STAR Scholars Summer Showcase featured in-person and virtual presentations from participating students. 

Six faculty from Westphal College of Media Arts & Design are recipients of 2021 faculty research awards from the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Office of Faculty Advancement. Funding from the Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity Award and Summer Research Award support tenure/tenure track faculty development of research, scholarship, and creative activities.

Third-year Westphal Fashion Design student Nicole Castañeda was selected as the 2021 recipient of the annual Charles Evans Scholarship. 

Fashion Design first-year and Westphal BRIDGE Scholar, Jazminé Morrow, is a recipient of the , a one-time scholarship of $500 to academically successful students who are studying the fashion industry.

91ÖÆƬ³§ Fashion Design ’20 alumni Amanda Forastieri won the 2020 Supima Design Competition with her collection Utopia presented during the 13th annual runway show on September 10, 2020. The event was open to all and broadcasted on Supima's Instagram Live with host and renowned celebrity image architect, Law Roach.

The Department of Design includes Westphal’s programs in Fashion Design(undergraduate and graduate), Design & Merchandising (D&M), Retail & Merchandising, Graphic Design, Photography, and Product Design. The Department is making good use of its strong relationships with industry and other Drexel departments to implement exciting solutions to current limitations while finding ways to stay connected to each other and their students.

Five Design & Merchandising and Fashion Design students received $5,000 awards from the —the largest fashion scholarship program in the world.

Zinan (Gina) Guo represented 91ÖÆƬ³§'s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design at the 12th annual Supima Design Competition and won first place with her collection 'White Skeleton'. Finalists showcased collections at New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, competing for a $10,000 cash prize.

The 61^st annual Grammy Awards saw no shortage of envelope-pushing fashions on the red carpet, but one of the most talked-about looks of the evening boasts a Drexel connection. Tierra Whack, hip-hop recording artist and North Philadelphia native, wowed in an ensemble designed by Westphal graduate Fashion Design alumna and award-winning fashion designer Nancy Volpe Beringer with images painted by Liz Goldberg, Fashion Design adjunct instructor and internationally recognized artist and animator.

Fashion is signified and utilized across the globe. The second annual Fashion, Style & Global Culture Conference will focus on how fashion is portrayed in all types of popular and global culture. This conference aims to push the envelope of scholarship to gain new understandings about the visual expression of fashion, lifestyles, global culture and textiles through all forms. 

Four Design & Merchandising and Fashion Design students received $5,000 awards from the 2019 —the largest fashion scholarship program in the world.

This year, six Drexel Fashion Design students submitted work to the 2018 International Fashion Illustration Competition in Korea and all six received awards for their excellent submissions.

Xiaohan Zhou, second year graduate fashion design student, appeared on Chinese fashion competition show, along with numerous recent awards and honors.

The end of spring term is rapidly approaching, and for many students, this is the busiest time of year. It’s impossible not to feel enormous pride in the creative and accomplished work that is the culmination of years of hard work and study. This year's Senior Show Exhibitions of Work include Fashion Design, Digital Media, Film & Video, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Photography, Design & Merchandising and Product Design.

Do you have children, siblings, friends or peers interested in attending Westphal? Our Summer Programs are now enrolling High School students who want to get a head start on college studies.

Interdisciplinary learning is a key component to our curriculum at Westphal. In the winter term students will have the opportunity to learn from a product designer and visual artists duo in Making Things Move; explore the physicality of virtual reality in Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Reality; develop wearable technology in Pattern Material and Form; or get lost in the oddities of 1950s television programming in Supernatural Drama.  Click to read full descriptions about these engaging course offerings.

BioDesign Challenge is a special topics course that will be offered this winter term and is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Participants will work towards a coveted spot in the annual , an annual competition held in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).

This October, Westphal will partner with Intellect Books to host , an annual and intensive three-day symposium focused on how fashion is portrayed throughout varying forms of media.Ìý

Lela Thompson, a 2017 Westphal fashion design alumna, will represent Westphal as one of the coveted and highly selective participants during the tenth annual 2017 SUPIMA design competition.Ìý

(FHCC) has collaborated with Google and hundreds of world renowned cultural institutions to bring 3,000 years of the world's fashion together in the largest virtual exhibition of style. The is a collaboration between the FHCC and over 180  institutions from New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, S ão Paulo and around the world. 

David Raizman has twice been Interim Dean of this College, has served as both our Department Head of Media Arts and Department Head of Fashion and Visual Studies, and was twice the Academic Associate Dean of the College.Ìý

Renee Weiss Chase, Fashion Design Professor, has been dedicated to the growth of our graduate and undergraduate Fashion Design programs, which now enjoy rankings as the third best in the country and the 13th best in the world.

Romanticism, mythological creatures, the Taj Mahal, and engineered infrastructure were the inspiration for some of our student designers whose collections will be featured in Fashion '17, Drexel University’s Annual Fashion Show, on Saturday, June 10 at the Urban Outfitters Corporate Headquarters in Philadelphia's Navy Yard (5000 South Broad St., Building 543). The first show will be held at 4PM with a ticket price of $30. The second show will be held at 8PM and will be followed by a wine and cheese reception with a ticket price of $60. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased . 

Support for this College’s faculty’s creative and scholarly research is vital now more than ever in our time of diminishing governmental, foundation, and corporate support. The Westphal College’s Mini Grants and Creativity Awards program is dedicated to doing just that.

Ken Downing, the Senior Vice President and Global Fashion Ambassador of Neiman Marcus, is no stranger to the Westphal College. For the past four years, Downing has visited at the start of each spring to share his behind-the-runway forecast of the year’s coveted fashion trends, while giving an overview of the top shows in Paris, London, Milan, and New York to our many dedicated followers of fashion.Ìý

Iceland has harnessed the business of design to create a strong and sustainable economy leading to a recovery from the economic downturn of 2008. Earlier this year, twenty-two students from across the University along with Design & Merchandising Professors Anne Cecil and Alphonso McClendon visited Reykjavik, Iceland and participated in Design Talks and the Reykjavik Fashion Festival, all part of Iceland’s weeklong Design March festival.Ìý

Last term students partnered with , an organization whose mission is to support immigrants, refugees, and their families as they seek access to opportunities that will advance the condition of their lives in the United States.

The prestigious London-based fashion trade publication, ,Ìýrecently released their rankings and have our as #3 in the United States and #11 in the world. , which produces USA Today’s College Guide, new rankings have Westphal as #5 nationally out of 223 schools in the category of Best Design and Applied Arts Schools.

Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus’ Senior Vice President and Fashion Director, will visit Westphal on Thursday, April 21^st.  

The Department of Defense has announced $75 million in funding for a national research institute, the Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA), emphasizing the combination of technology and textiles towards developing new materials for American textile manufactures and market places across varying industries. Drexel will chair the Mid-Atlantic chapter.
