Richard Huneke, DVM, is professor emeritus in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology.

Dr. Huneke was appointed to serve as the U.S. representative (through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science) to the . ICLAS serves to harmonize laboratory standards worldwide, promote laboratory animal care and ethics, and provide training opportunities to developing areas in the world. Dr. Huneke will begin to serve a four-year term starting in October 2023. This opportunity will benefit the University through international connections as well as disseminating information about the Master of Laboratory Animal Science program. ICLAS offers scholarships to lab animal personnel in underserved areas to attend lab animal training.

Research

Animals are indispensable to unraveling the medical mysteries that still plague our society. Dr. Huneke's work is based on providing a clean, enriched and healthy environment for animals used in biomedical research. He assisted researchers in the planning and performance of research with special interests in microbiology, immunology, neonatology and pharmacology. One focus of his work was in disease transmission between animals and man (zoonoses).

His professional activities also include serving for many years as executive director of ULAR. He is a former council member for the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), and also served as president of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR).
