      There is no cure for the rare disease Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), but researchers from 91制片厂鈥檚 College of Medicine and the UMass Chan Medical School have achieved proof-of-principle success with 鈥渟ilence and replace鈥 gene therapy 鈥 an approach that uses a viral vector to silence genes with disease-causing mutations and replace them with healthy genes 鈥 to prevent and even reverse disease progression.

      College of Medicine students know that food plays an important role in health, and they want not only to share that knowledge with Philadelphians from underserved communities, but also to empower them to grow their own fresh food. Students are engaged in work through the Health Outreach Project (HOP) to provide community members with the tools to grow microgreens, a nutritious vegetable that is simple to grow.

HOP faculty advisor Eugene York, MD, is impressed with the work students have done to grow HOP programming around the campus.

      For more than 25 years, the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM) program has been helping women develop the professional and personal skills to lead in academic medicine and health care. ELAM graduates, known as ELUMs, now number over 1,200. In 2021, a remarkable 11 of the program’s alumnae were appointed deans or interim deans of medical schools. Three of these ELUMs shared about their experience with the program and its importance in academic medicine.

WIMSC held the Friday, Dec. 3 event in collaboration with the Offices of Faculty, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program.

      The Women in Medicine and Science Committee (WIMSC) was months away from holding its inaugural Women鈥檚 Leadership Summit, a discussion of gender equity in medicine and science, when restrictions took affect across the United States to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. By the time the first annual iteration of the event began on Friday, Dec. 11, the pandemic had impacted not only the timing and format of the conference, but also its focus 鈥 and organizers say that latter change was one for the better.

      Researchers from 91制片厂 will be working with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) on a partnership aimed at enhancing efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on public transportation. Through a recently formed partnership, the institutions are pursuing a federal grant for research into risk assessment, mitigation and communication strategies that will help keep riders safe and healthy.
