      Post-doctoral fellow Sharrelle Barber, ScD, MPH, has focused much of her research with the Urban Health Collaborative on the connections between race, place and health in the U.S. South. This summer, she took on a new challenge: applying her social epidemiological approach to study the health implications of residential segregation by class and race in Brazil. Early results from her work are striking, as race, place and health have rarely been discussed and studied there.

      A recent study by researchers from 91ÖÆÆ¬³§â€™s Center for Hunger-Free Communities found that a high number of participants in a federal cash assistance program have suffered significant childhood adversity, exposure to violence as adults and other poverty-related stressors, highlighting the need to take participants’ past trauma into account.

      91ÖÆÆ¬³§â€™s Shezda Afrin, BS PH ’19, is spending her summer in Bangladesh working with a non-profit assisting orphans in Dhaka.

      Afrin, who considers Dhaka her second home, has been working at an orphanage and local health clinic led by (DCI), a non-profit organization helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, economic security and protection. She is teaching English to both staff and the girls at the orphanage. She's also working with staff to develop computer skills, helping them learn to create spreadsheets and documents to help run the orphanage.

      A group of man-made chemicals used in some pesticides and insulating materials banned in the 1970s continues to linger in the United States, and new research by a 91ÖÆÆ¬³§ professor and colleagues found that high levels of exposure to some of them during pregnancy may increase the likelihood of a child being diagnosed with autism by roughly 80 percent.
