      Though Philadelphia is a city that wears its history on its sleeve, with a thriving tourism industry around the landmarks of early American democracy, many significant histories of the more recent past – like the leveling of Black Bottom – remain untold. Today, however, two different projects in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design engage with University City’s history of gentrification.

      In spring 2022, Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and Curtis Institute of Music presented Rehearsing Philadelphia: A Meta-Score by Ari Benjamin Meyers through a series of events across the city. Rehearsing Philadelphia was initially conceived prior to the start of the pandemic, but the project’s driving questions – centered around justice, virtuosity, access, memory, and togetherness – were shaped and reshaped by COVID’s impact. Taking place across the city, Rehearsing Philadelphia became a poignant analogy for the ways in which people would come back together, as pairings, small groups, and large collectives.

      Associate Teaching Professor of Film & Television John Avarese is a musician, composer, and sound professional with over 40 feature film credits (not to mention countless short films and surround-sound planetarium features). He runs a production company, Three Professors Media, with Westphal colleagues Karin Kelly (Department Head of Cinema & Television) and Matt Kaufhold (Program Director of Screenwriting & Playwriting). For his upcoming project, he’s handling all aspects of audio post-production, which has led to interesting collaborations within Westphal and across the University.
