In late April, the UHC, Latino Health Collective, and PHDSAG hosted an event highlighting research about how immigration enforcement is affecting the public鈥檚 health, and to learn from community organizations representing Philadelphia鈥檚 diverse immigrant communities.

Rebekah Israel Cross is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago. Her talk explored this theme within the context of philanthropy: how the current philanthropic system can perpetuate health equity retrenchment (the reduction of investment to improve health equity), and a real-world example of this taking place within the Chicago public housing system.

On April 30th, the Queer Inclusion, Equity, Health, and Rights (QuIEHR) Working Group hosted the 4th Annual Symposium on Sexual and Gender Minority Health, Aging with Pride: Health, Resilience, and Equity for Older Queer Philadelphians. They sought to highlight the experiences of our elders, many of whom are activists who have been involved in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equity since the beginning.

At this year鈥檚 Urban Health Summer Institute, the UHC is thrilled to be able to host a new course taught by Dr. Jourdyn Lawrence, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Dornsife School of Public Health and Affiliate Faculty with the UHC. We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Lawrence about the course and her thoughts on the public health crisis brought by racial inequality.
