Philanthropy and the Crisis of Health Equity Retrenchment with Dr Rebekah Israel Cross
is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago. Much of her current work uses quantitative and qualitative methods to explore how structural inequality impacts health to conceptualize and measure racism. Moreover, her work explores unpacking the relationships between racism, housing, and health, and highlighting how the field of public health can, at times, even perpetuate racism.
Her talk explored this theme within the context of philanthropy, how the current philanthropic system can perpetuate health equity retrenchment (the reduction of investment to improve health equity), and a real-world example of this taking place within the Chicago public housing system.
