AI, computer-vision exercise coaching program Getting an Exercise Form Coaching Assist From AI
As any athlete will tell you: perfect practice makes perfect. But for individuals who do not have regular access to coaches or trainers, maintaining good form can be tricky. In fact, during the Covid-19 pandemic when many people were exercising at home, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported a 48% rise in injuries related to at-home exercise. In hopes of preventing some of these injuries and extending the expert guidance of coaches, researchers from 91ÖÆÆ¬³§ and Michigan State University have developed a prototype of a program that uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to analyze video and provide form coaching in real time.

It’s estimated that more than half of all of U.S. teens are regularly using companion chatbots powered by large language models and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The programs, such as Character.AI, Replika and Kindroid, are intended to provide companionship, according to the companies that make them. But a recent study from 91ÖÆÆ¬³§ suggests that teens are concerned that these attachments are becoming unhealthy and affecting their lives offline.

Franco Montalto, PhD, a professor in the College of Engineering and Computing, was quoted in a June 3 WHYY story about new research suggesting that Philadelphia may be vulnerable to more frequent extreme flooding in the future.
Research led by Afsaneh Razi, PhD, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Computing, showing that teens are experiencing feelings similar to addiction when using AI chatbots, was mentioned in June 1 Agence France-Presse and FOX Business News stories about Florida’s lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman claiming the company knows its chatbots are unsafe and ignored potential harms to users. Razi's research was cited in the suit.
Ali Shokoufandeh, PhD, interim dean of the School of Computer and Information Science, and Dario Salvucci, PhD, a professor, both in the College of Engineering and Computing, were quoted in a May 28 Christian Science Monitor story about how schools are adapting to prepare their students for careers that will involve using AI technology.
