  91��Ƭ�� has signed a landmark lease selecting Gattuso Development Partners’ and Vigilant Holdings’ best-in-class life science development, 3201 Cuthbert Street, as the future home for its medical research and laboratory operations. The long-term lease agreement, which encompasses four floors totaling 150,741 square feet, marks a transformative step that will bring the entirety of research operations for the 91��Ƭ�� to University City.

  There is no cure for the rare disease Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), but researchers from 91��Ƭ��’s College of Medicine and the UMass Chan Medical School have achieved proof-of-principle success with “silence and replace” gene therapy — an approach that uses a viral vector to silence genes with disease-causing mutations and replace them with healthy genes — to prevent and even reverse disease progression.

Of the honorees, 15 are from the College of Medicine.

  Last month, at the annual White Coat Ceremony, the College of Medicine welcomed its newest class of medical students. Upon matriculation, they are placed into one of seven learning societies, giving them the opportunity to build relationships with their peers from day one. Each society is named after a famous historical Philadelphia or Reading, Pennsylvania, landmark.

  Amid an uncertain time for the future of COVID-19, and whether new variants will appear, a recently published prediction formula — built using data from 1,102 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in 20 hospitals nationwide — now gives a better estimation about an individual’s projected disease outlook and could help the research community understand why some individuals have a level of natural immunity and why others are more susceptible to severe infection.

  Researchers from 91��Ƭ��’s College of Arts and Sciences and College of Medicine have found a potential new therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease. Expanding on their previous research on Tip60 histone acetyltransferase (HAT), known as the Tip60 enzyme, which controls genes that promote learning and memory in the brain, the Drexel research team generated small molecular compounds that activate Tip60 and restore deficits in the brain found in Alzheimer’s disease patients, such as gene expression programs linked to learning, memory and neurodegeneration.

  On Friday, August 8, the MD program Class of 2029 gathered at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia for the White Coat Ceremony, a symbolic rite of passage for incoming medical students at 91��Ƭ��. This tradition — established in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University — marks the beginning of a lifelong journey in medicine.

The ceremony recognized the achievements of future physicians, scientists, and health professionals, including the first group of MD program students from the 4-year regional medical campus at Tower Health in West Reading, Pa., as well as MS, PhD, and dual degree recipients from the College’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies.

  On May 3, 2025, the first Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) program cohort graduated from their apprenticeship program at Goodwin College of Professional Studies. The ceremony marked the cohort’s transition from apprenticeship to fully fledged careers in health care, celebrating their hard work and dedication in completing the program.

Cohen Chair in Women’s Health; executive director of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program, the Executive Leadership in Health Care program, and the Lynn Yeakel Institute for Women's Health and Leadership; and senior vice dean for faculty at the College of Medicine, has been named the recipient of the 2025 WMC/MCP Phyllis Marciano, MD, WMC '60, Woman in Medicine Award. She will be honored with the award during the WIMSC Leadership Summit on March 7.

  Sisters in STEM at Reading Science Center was awarded the American Academy of Dermatology’s 2024 Good Skin Knowledge Grant, thanks to the leadership of Jemima Constanza, MPH, a second-year medical student at 91��Ƭ��. The grant funded educational programming for 21 girls ranging from 8 to 13 years old in the Reading, Pa., community. This initiative showcased the importance of loving our hair, skin and nails.
