  College of Medicine students know that food plays an important role in health, and they want not only to share that knowledge with Philadelphians from underserved communities, but also to empower them to grow their own fresh food. Students are engaged in work through the Health Outreach Project (HOP) to provide community members with the tools to grow microgreens, a nutritious vegetable that is simple to grow.

  While the Health Outreach Project (HOP) has been part of the 91��Ƭ��’s culture for more than 25 years, the community outreach programming only expanded to Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2021, when 91��Ƭ�� at Tower Health opened in West Reading. HOP faculty advisor Eugene York, MD, is impressed with the work students have done to grow HOP programming around the campus.

  On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the 91��Ƭ�� community gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of the ceremonial opening of the new Health Sciences Building, at 36th and Filbert Streets on the University’s main campus. As 2022 comes to an end, the College of Medicine looks forward to our medical and graduate students joining the 91��Ƭ�� College of Nursing and Health Professions in the new space in the new year.

National leaders in the rapidly growing field of immune engineering pursuing these answers will gather at 91��Ƭ�� for the 4th Annual Immune Modulation and Engineering Symposium, hosted by Drexel’s School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems.

  A team of researchers from 91��Ƭ�� has proposed a way to detect Lyme disease by looking for a unique polymer-protein indicator that occurs before the immune reaction is triggered. The group’s method recently received a boost from a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Steve & Alexandra Cohen Foundation initiative to finally find an effective test for the disease.

  The breathtaking pace of development for COVID-19 vaccines showed what was possible with enough resources. Subsequent development of the vaccines is a reminder that viruses are a moving target that is ever-changing. Vaccines for COVID-19, malaria, the flu, and many other diseases must constantly adapt to these changes to protect recipients from disease. But how can researchers anticipate which participants in a clinical trial will gain immunity days after they get a dose of a vaccine?

  Members of the College of Medicine community came together on October 27 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City Philadelphia for Discovery Day 2022, to share original research across many biomedical science and clinical research topics. The event brought together those involved with research at different stages of their careers.

Many of those students signed on this year to be matched as “Bigs” to Class of 2026 “Littles,” sharing lessons they learned in their own first year of medical school and welcoming the incoming first-year medical students to the campus community they helped to build.

The occasion was marked by a 4D Fellowship event at Janssen’s Spring House facility, where the inaugural fellows presented their research progress and the incoming fellows introduced themselves to Janssen scientists.

The all-day event covered a variety of topics, from the basics of sexuality, gender identity and expression, to providing culturally-sensitive health care to LGBTQ+ patients who are refugees.

  The 29th Annual 91��Ƭ�� Pediatric AIDS Benefit Concert (PABC) raised over $16,000 for children living with HIV and AIDS. Since its inception, PABC has raised over $600,000 for the patients of the Dorothy Mann Center for Pediatric and Adolescent HIV at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
