It is with great sadness that we recognize the passing renowned professor Walter H. Moleski on November 30.  Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Walter first became interested in architecture as a child and he later graduated from the Tulane Architecture School in 1960. Returning to Philadelphia he worked for several architectural firms including Louis Sauer and GBQC before starting a partnership with George Manos. 

Shushi Yoshinaga, Associate Professor in the Graphic Design program, led a group of 91��Ƭ�� and Tamagawa University students in a joint study, “Aging, Technology and Japanese Culture” to research the challenging issues of an aging society in Japan.

The Interior Design and Architecture programs of Westphal College received commendation from highly respected DesignIntelligence. The publication surveyed 9,000 hiring professionals, 4,200 professional practice organizations, and over 6,000 students. This year’s rankings are for 12 different areas of focus, and Westphal is recognized in 11 of these 12 categories. Additionally, we are pleased to report that our Architecture program was ranked among the Most Admired Architecture programs in the nation.

91��Ƭ��’s Department of Performing Arts presents SUPPER, People on the Move! performed by the Cardell Dance Theater with choreography by Philadelphia-based artist Silvana Cardell. SUPPER will be performed from November 8-10 in Drexel’s URBN Center Annex Black Box Theater.

The Department of Cinema & Television’s Nicholas Natalicchio wears many hats: adjunct instructor for the Film & Television program, Post Production Facilities Manager, Executive Producer for Dragon Productions—the department’s student-staffed video production company—and independent filmmaker and multimedia professional. Between all of this, Nick found time to sit down with Vivianna Bermudez, Westphal’s Director of Communications & Events, and share some news about his latest project, an award winning documentary short titled “.”

Zinan (Gina) Guo represented 91��Ƭ��'s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design at the 12th annual Supima Design Competition and won first place with her collection 'White Skeleton'. Finalists showcased collections at New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, competing for a $10,000 cash prize.

The Consortium for Design and Education Outcomes (CDEO), a collaboration between 91��Ƭ�� and Perkins Eastman, won the prestigious Latrobe Prize, along with a $100,000 award

Sabrina Tran, a Graphic Design major from the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design teamed up with LeBow College of Business junior Ben Red to win the 2nd annual Brand X Challenge experience design competition in 2019.

Out of more than 2,000 submissions from 42 countries, 91��Ƭ��’s Interactive Digital Media Program has won three awards in the 2019 Muse Creative/Muse Design Awards competition. 

Graduate students from the Interior Architecture program presented their work on a symposium panel at the  (EDRA) titled “Bright Futures, Dark Futures: Envisioning the Consequences of Climate Change.”

Interior Design junior Justin Lee was awarded second place in the national Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship competition, which awards interior design students with scholarships and summer internships. 

Chloe Tolderlund, a sophomore in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design's Product Design program won the NYCxDesign Student Design Award at the 2019 International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).

Jen Blazina, a professor in the Department of Art & Art History, is an acclaimed Philadelphia artist who regularly exhibits nationally and internationally. With a background in printmaking, Jen has been awarded numerous residences and grants, including funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Leeway Foundation, Maryland State Arts Council, and the Independence Foundation. 

On April 18, alumni, students and faculty from the Paul F. Harron Graduate Program in Television Management gathered for their annual networking event. This year's reception marked a special occasion, the retirement of TVMN Associate Professor Phil Salas.

The latest episode of our award-winning student-produced monthly TV news magazine will premier its latest episode on Friday, May 17 at 8PM. The show’s hosts are Chris Markowitz and Laurel Yaros. The episode includes a close-up look at Philadelphia’s opioid crisis, through the lens of 91��Ƭ�� Photography alum, Jeffrey Stockbridge. DNews reporters also take you to the URBN Center’s Black Box Theater for She Kills Monsters, the cross-collaboration between Drexel’s Co-op Theatre Company and Entrepreneurial Game Studio. You’ll learn how the Drexel Women’s Basketball Team is making assists, both on the court and off. DNews will also take you inside two area events – one focusing on edgy artwork and the other on mythical creatures. 

Next month, the 91��Ƭ�� Co-Op Theatre Company will present its final show of the season, Be More Chill, May 9 – 12 in the Mandell Theater. Be More Chill, a new musical that recently made its Broadway debut, has already earned a massive teenage fanbase. The musical centers around Jeremy Heere, a typical high school wallflower who desperately wants to be popular. Jeremy discovers he can swallow a pill - a Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor, or SQUIP - that implants in his brain and teaches him how to be popular. What could possibly go wrong.

Film & Television Program Director Tom Quinn’s feature film Colewell premieres at the (SFFilm) this week. For Tom and the film’s team, it’s the culmination of countless hours of development, production, fine-tuning and promotion—to the great benefit of the work itself and to Westphal students.

Drexel Interior Architecture students were awarded the second place in the 14th annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Student Design Competition. This prestigious competition celebrates the talent and fresh design ideas of interior design students currently enrolled in interior design programs throughout the world.

The US premiere of Edinburgh Fringe hit Bon Jovie Musical We’ve Got Each Other is the latest production by the 91��Ƭ�� Entertainment & Arts Management “Producing for Live Entertainment” class, taught by professor Brannon Wiles.

In just two weeks, the 91��Ƭ�� Department of Performing Arts will host its 20^th Annual Jazz Extravaganza. The evening will feature the department’s Jazz Orchestra and Jazztet, led by director Brent White, who took the role in the Fall, with guest musicians from the Howard University Jazz Ensemble.

Westphal College Communications Coordinator Laurel Hostak spoke with Entertainment & Arts Management alum Zach Blackwood (Class of 2014) about his role as an Artistic Producer for in Philadelphia. Now presenting --a series of performance works by Philadelphia artists--Zach shared his early ambitions, some inside tips for Westphal students interested in the Philly arts scene, and thoughts on how an EAM education helped pave the way to a career in creative leadership.

Westphal Interior Design student teams swept the awards in the third annual HOK Philadelphia Futures Design Competition in Interior Design. Two-person student teams from area Architecture and Interior Design programs competed for internships and cash prizes. First Place, including a $6,000 prize and 3-month internships went to Leah Stoner and Taylor Regester (3rd year grads); Second Place, with a $4,000 prize went to Justin Lee and Eunbi Kim (junior and 3rd year grad); Third Place, with a $2,000 prize went to Kristianne Simeon and Aishwarya Gunta (2nd year grads). This is the third year of the event, and Westphal students have taken first place all three years.

The 61^st annual Grammy Awards saw no shortage of envelope-pushing fashions on the red carpet, but one of the most talked-about looks of the evening boasts a Drexel connection. Tierra Whack, hip-hop recording artist and North Philadelphia native, wowed in an ensemble designed by Westphal graduate Fashion Design alumna and award-winning fashion designer Nancy Volpe Beringer with images painted by Liz Goldberg, Fashion Design adjunct instructor and internationally recognized artist and animator.

Fashion is signified and utilized across the globe. The second annual Fashion, Style & Global Culture Conference will focus on how fashion is portrayed in all types of popular and global culture. This conference aims to push the envelope of scholarship to gain new understandings about the visual expression of fashion, lifestyles, global culture and textiles through all forms. 

We are proud to announce that 777 Westphal College undergraduate students have received Dean’s List honors for the Fall 2018 academic term. Both full-time students carrying 12 credits or more and part-time students who have accumulated 12 credits or more with a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher qualify for Dean’s List honors.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced its nominees for the 91st Academy Awards on Tuesday, and four of the nominated films feature the work of Drexel alumni from the Department of Digital Media: Ralph Breaks the Internet, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ready Player One, and Avengers: Infinity War. 2019 is the seventh consecutive year that films nominated in the Visual Effects or Animated Feature Film category have featured the work of Westphal Digital Media graduates.

Charles Peck, a ’10 alum of the Music Industry program at 91��Ƭ��, is the recipient of the 2019 Young Alumni Emerging Leader Award, presented by 91��Ƭ�� Alumni Relations.

Three alumni of the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design’s Architecture Program are appointees to the leadership of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Philadelphia and Pennsylvania chapters. The AIA advocates for the value of architecture and gives architects the resources they need to do their best work, driving positive change through the power of design. Founded in 1869, the AIA Philadelphia is among the oldest and most distinguished of AIA chapters, with a long history of service to members and the public.

The new associate program director of 91��Ƭ��’s music industry program is using his experiences as the bassist of the indie electronica band to teach students about being on the live music side of the music industry.

On February 22 and 23, 2019, the 91��Ƭ�� Chamber Singers will host a night of madrigals, chansons, jesters, jugglers, sword fights, and a toast to the Queen at the 29th Annual Madrigal Dinners in the Great Court of 91��Ƭ��’s Main Building. This year, audiences will be transported to the Elizabethan sounds, tastes, and courtly improvisations of 1589.

Each winter, the Drexel Dance Ensemble and FreshDance present two dynamic concerts in the Mandell Theater. These performances provide Drexel students, regardless of their major, an opportunity to express their artistry through dance performance or choreography. 

Four Design & Merchandising and Fashion Design students received $5,000 awards from the 2019 —the largest fashion scholarship program in the world.
