The School of Engineering prides itself on building a research agenda that addresses society’s most pressing challenges. Faculty and students are on a journey of continual discovery that results in inspired, multi-disciplinary research in many of the most transformative areas of engineering. Because of our location, we are surrounded by numerous academic and corporate institutions, uniquely positioning the School to address the needs of the city, region and beyond.
The School of Engineering educates through innovative research, using current technologies and a focus on critical societal challenges. Unlike other institutions, our curriculum provides immediate research opportunities for the undergraduate student in our Freshmen Design program. This focus on research continues through to the senior year, culminating with Senior Design projects and competition, overseen by faculty and graduate students.
PhD students focus on many pertinent engineering topics, fusing theory with practical solutions in a diverse environment. Under the guidance of scholarly faculty, students become agents of new knowledge.
Research Areas
Inspired by the thematic goals of our strategic plan, this magazine and website highlights research from across the School of Engineering.
A new technique combining fluorescent microscopy and machine learning can forecast lithium-ion battery capacity before cells are assembled, potentially transforming manufacturing quality control and reducing costly scrap rates in electric vehicle production.
The team built a validated digital model that predicts how their flipper-powered robotic sea lion swims, offering engineers a powerful new framework for designing articulated underwater vehicles.
New researched has developed a novel way to predict how tiny cracks in aircraft fuselages grow and join together over time. The work could help engineers design safer aircraft and develop better maintenance schedules.
