Our Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

Our process of teaching and learning is guided by our institutional teaching philosophy.

We believe that students learn best in positive and nurturing environments where they feel simultaneously challenged and supported. Therefore, we strive to create a community of learners who are guided by their instructors through a variety of stimulating activities aimed at improving their specific language skills and overall language competency under the guidance of the course Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). In addition, since learning English does not happen only in the classroom, we provide students with numerous opportunities to practice and improve their English skills through various cultural and social activities.

We see our students not only as second language learners but as goal-oriented individuals, as thinkers and doers who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Thus, our objective is always to create purposeful interactions in which students must engage in order to successfully pursue their academic or professional goals. We tailor our instruction to match our students' abilities and to meet their needs, interests and reasons for study. Moreover, our philosophy of instruction is based on the belief that learning a language is most successful when it happens through meaningful interactions with engaging materials. Therefore, in addition to utilizing traditional ESL textbooks, we incorporate authentic materials at all levels to make learning genuinely interesting, relevant and current. We also provide students with authentic models for production and integrate grammar instruction into appropriate writing contexts.

In addition, we believe that language learning, like all learning, happens during the process of meaning-making. As a result, effective teaching involves creating tasks that engage students in critical thinking, leading our language instruction to be content based, academically focused and task oriented. We use a learner-centered and communicative approach, where students achieve goals by participating in collaborative tasks while the instructor facilitates, guides and gives feedback. Our approach is interactive, which means students are also resources for each other's learning.

We believe in continuous formative feedback as an essential part of language learning. Students are given frequent assessments and daily feedback during classes, as well as summative and formative feedback in the middle and at the end of the term. Teachers' feedback is not limited to error correction but reflects all skills practiced in the classroom, such as summarizing, synthesizing, clarifying, questioning and predicting. We believe evaluative feedback must mirror students' reasoning and critical thinking.

We believe students are most motivated and engaged when they are given agency and opportunities to take charge of their own learning. Hence, our students are often given choices. At the same time, we believe they should be held accountable for their learning and are, therefore, expected to complete coursework, attend and participate in their classes.
