Preparing your data for spatial linkages in research with secondary health data sources
Date: Tuesday, October 21, 2025
Time: 1:00–2:00 PM (ET)
Location: Virtual – Zoom | Free
Join us for an interactive, hands-on session where you will learn to identify spatial information in your data and leverage it by connecting to secondary data sources. Participants will practice using real-world examples with a focus on planning and preparation rather than technical software training. Sample data sets will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring one of your own that you would like to explore. Once you register, you will receive more details on how to prepare, and we are available at jr3755@drexel.edu to help. This is a follow-up to our introductory webinar (recording available here) and new participants are encouraged to join!

The Data Core for the Autism Institute Autism Centers of Excellence grant (PHASES) hosted a webinar introducing spatial data and how it could be used to enrich health research. Spatial data referred to data that contained a geographic component, such as individual locations or areas like zip codes or counties. Many data sources, including insurance claims and electronic health records, were focused on administrative concerns and did not capture key contextual information that might impact health outcomes. For example, they often included little to no information on social determinants of health (SDOH) or neighborhood context. When data included location information, it could be linked with spatial datasets to enrich research. During the webinar, presenters provided an overview of the data linkage process, identified key area-level data sources, and highlighted questions that this linkage helped answer.
This session was ideal for researchers and others looking to explore new methods for expanding the scope and depth of their work. No prior experience with spatial data was required for this foundational webinar. Participants were provided with additional resources and opportunities for continued learning through the Urban Health Collaborative. To watch this webinar, please click HERE.
