Conviction rates for Intimate Partner Violence criminal cases are directly correlated to the existence and adequacy of corroborating medical documentation. A recent Department of Justice Study found that certain types of evidence commonly found in medical records doubled the likelihood that the abuser would subsequently be convicted of the crime. All too often, this vital and legally relevant evidence contained in medical records is ruled inadmissible in court. A study by the National Institute of Justice analyzed over eight hundred statements from various medical records and found that approximately 28, or 3.4%, were deemed independently admissible in court. These rulings have little to do with the content of the underlying information; rather, the wording, level of detail and legibility of the records themselves are at fault.

Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions can add another notch to its belt when it comes to programs that boast a 100% pass rate on a professional licensure exam. The first cohort of students from the Human Lactation Consultant program graduated this spring, and this fall, all successfully passed the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) exam. Now, as newly minted International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), they’re ready to put their skills to good use.

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) recently elected Ellen Bass, PhD, who shares joint appointments in the College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) and the College of Nursing and Health Professions, as Fellow in the Society. According to HFES, the Fellow designation, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Society, recognizes Bass’ “outstanding achievement, consistently superior professional performance, exceptional contributions, and service to the Society.”

As part of an ongoing global initiative experience, 14 students and 2 faculty members – Barbara Amendolia, DRNP, assistant clinical professor in the Division of Undergraduate Nursing, and Kathleen Fisher, PhD, professor of Doctoral Nursing Programs --traveled to Ireland from Philadelphia International Airport to learn about nursing education, clinical practice, nursing research and service learning in Ireland and experience the culture in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The physician assistant (PA) profession is deeply rooted in the military with ties dating back to 1965 – the year the nation’s first “physician assistant” educational program was inaugurated at Duke University. The Program accepted four former Navy medical corpsmen. Other veterans were inspired by this potential career path, thanks in part to a Reader’s Digest article about careers in health care noting the PA profession and a White House Conference on Health that same year that discussed the use of former military corpsmen/medics as “assistant medical officers,” and inquiries began to flood.

On November 16, 2015, graduating students in the Nurse Anesthesia Program attended the first of what faculty and staff hope will become an annual career preparedness event. Nurse Anesthesia Program Professional Development Career Day brought recruiters from top industry employers, such as EmCare, Sheridan Health Care, Somnia Anesthesia Services, and U.S. Army Healthcare together with two program alumni to Three Parkway to share their advice and experience with 20 future CRNAs.

They get to create a leadership portfolio and toolbox that will benefit them throughout their career and develop a personal brand – not to mention they’re introduced to a mentor to lend a listening ear and a helping hand at the ready!

More than 45 percent of adults have not had a dental visit in the past year, and 27 percent of children have received no preventative dental care in the North Philadelphia neighborhood where the Stephen and Sandra Sheller 11th Street Family Health Services Center operates. A new expansion to the health center’s dental clinic will address this gap and provide the community with much-needed access to oral health services.
