      Dr. Peter A. Lewin, Richard B. Beard 聽 Distinguished University Professor and Director, 聽Biomedical Ultrasound Research 聽and Education Center, was the recipient of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Philadelphia Section聽2018 Benjamin Franklin Key Award. The award recognizes 聽 an electrical 聽 engineer for outstanding technical innovation and technological 聽 contributions that have had significant 聽 practical applications. The award emphasizes technical innovation, such 聽 as a system (design and application), a significant聽improvement to a system, or patents of clear technical and technological achievements, which demonstrate intellectual, industrial, economical, or human benefits. Dr. Lewin was awarded several patents in the field of ultrasound and has authored or co-authored over 250 scientific publications.

The director, producer, screenwriter and actor 鈥 whose breakout hit, 鈥淭he Sixth Sense,鈥 appeared nearly 20 years ago 鈥 is known for filming and setting his movies in and around Philadelphia, hiring locally and utilizing area vendors, and showcasing some of the region鈥檚 best-loved attractions and locales.

      Dr. Kara Spiller, Assistant Professor in BIOMED, received a 5-year $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program award for the project titled, "CAREER: Biomaterial-mediated Control over Macrophage Activation.” This is the most prestigious science award in support of early-career research. To be eligible for a CAREER, winners must demonstrate outstanding, innovative research that furthers the mission of their fields, and a commitment to education and community service, according to the NSF website.
