      Nicholas Pashos alumnus in BIOMED (BS '11), is a biomedical engineer and Tulane University doctoral graduate and co-creator of the technology used in developing the "next step in breast reconstruction" for breast cancer survivors at his Tulane University spinoff, BioAesthetics, that was named winner of BioChallenge 2015, an annual pitch competition hosted by the New Orleans BioInnovation Center. The annual competition, now in its fourth year, is the city's primary showcase for promising local biotech startups.

      Dr. Andres Kriete, associate professor in BIOMED, chaired the 'Success in Academia' professional development conference that was co-sponsored by the 91制片厂 and held on October 30, 2015 in Behrakis Grand Hall, 91制片厂. The conference featured nine highly accomplished speakers and panelists discussing academic career options and providing advice for graduate students, postdocs, and biomedical engineers and scientists. Attendees learned how to best position themselves for success in obtaining jobs in academic institutions, how to overcome obstacles and challenges, and gain important lab management skills. The event included breakout and panel sessions with options to learn about career building skills, negotiation tactics for faculty positions, or transitioning into academic careers from different job sectors. Following the sessions, a networking reception offered the opportunity for attendees to learn more about academic career choices by interacting with panelists in an informal setting.

      Dr. Margaret Wheatley, John M. Reid Professor in BIOMED, received a 1-year $100K W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Award for the project titled, 鈥淐reating a New Paradigm for Pancreatic Cancer Treatment.鈥 The goal of this project is to design "stealth" microbubbles that evade the immune system and deliver gemcitabine from nanoparticles created in situ, directly to the tumor, thereby overcoming problems with dense tissue around tumors. Success could usher in a new era of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) treatment, bringing a population that is considered unresectable within reach of a cure.

Amy Throckmorton, associate professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, and Ellen Bass, professor and head of the Department of Information Science, College of Computing & Informatics, received a Department of Education Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) grant for six doctoral students for 2015-2018: Drexel BIOMED Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Research Enterprise (iCARE) for Healthcare. Each fellowship recipient will receive a $34K stipend per academic year, in addition to $15.2K dedicated to tuition.

      Dimitri Arhontoulis, Kimberly Chan, Andrew Ellinger, Sachin Gandhi, Gabrielle Herrmann, and Iden Kurtaliaj (Advisors: Wan Shih, PhD, Michael Weingarten, MD 鈥 CoM) won the Wound-Closure category of the 2015 Coulter College Design Competition, held August 13鈥16, 2015 in Coral Gables, FL. The goal of the project was to increase the durability of wound closure in obese patients following laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

Pamela's selection was based on her project titled, "Modulating Macrophage Behavior in Blood Vessel Development and Maintenance" in the lab of Dr. Shulamit Levenberg in the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. This award carries with it a $20,000 fellowship and the title of "Stein Fellow."

      Guruprasad Krishnamoorthy, alumnus in BIOMED (MS '15), received a Marie Curie Fellowship position at Philips Healthcare, Netherlands. Guruprasad met all of the Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher qualifications for this prestigious fellowship position funded by the European Commission, allowing him not only to work in a top healthcare company, but also pursue a PhD at Eindhoven University. Guruprasad's graduate co-op at the University of Pennsylvania medical imaging lab was a contributing factor to his success.

She received a Drexel International Travel Award to attend the meeting.

      Even if you haven鈥檛 had a packaged dropped off via Amazon Prime Air or watched some amazing aerial video footage from a drone-cam, chances are you鈥檝e seen one of those zippy, remote-controlled fliers categorized as 鈥渦nmanned aircraft systems.鈥 Their growing prevalence in the skies, along with an industry push to fly them higher and farther, is forcing the Federal Aviation Administration to expand its regulatory purview. As a way of addressing technical issues critical to safe and successful integration of unmanned aircrafts into the nation鈥檚 airspace, the FAA announced the establishment of a National Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. 91制片厂 is one of several core research institutions that will be part of the Center, led by Mississippi State University, alongside dozens of associate research, commercial and government partners.

      The ceremonial opening kick of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Sao Paolo, Brazil, which was performed鈥攚ith the help of a brain-controlled exo-skeleton鈥攂y a local teen who had been paralyzed from the waste down due to a spinal cord injury, was a seminal moment for the area of neuroscience that strives to connect the brain with functional prosthetics. The public display was a representative of thousands of such neuroprosthetic advances in recent years, and the tens of years of brain research and technological development that have gone into them. And while this display was quite an achievement in its own right, a 91制片厂 biomedical engineer working at the leading edge of the field contends that these devices are also opening a new portal for researchers to understand how the brain functions.
